Hacer que la enseñanza superior rinda

BERKELEY – La enseñanza superior es una gran inversión y cada uno de los años posteriores a la enseñanza secundaria rinde un rédito de entre 10 y 15 por ciento, por término medio. Para los licenciados universitarios, eso significa centenares de miles de dólares a lo largo de toda la vida. Lamentablemente, los estudiantes que aspiran a cursar una enseñanza superior, sobre todo los de familias de ingresos bajos y en institutos de enseñanza secundaria con bajo rendimiento, carecen de la información necesaria para elegir adónde ir y qué estudiar a fin de aumentar al máximo el rendimiento de su inversión.

En los Estados Unidos, el gobierno del Presidente Barack Obama está intentando colmar ese desfase con el College ScoreCard, base de datos gratuita y fácilmente consultable que ofrece información imparcial sobre el desempeño y los costos de los centros públicos y privados de los EE.UU. que imparten enseñanza postsecundaria. En lugar de proponer una clasificación general de centros basada en alguna calibración compuesta de indicadores fundamentales, dicha base ofrece datos detallados que abarcan cinco categorías amplias: costos, deudas de los estudiantes y su amortización, tasas de obtención de los títulos, ingresos durante los estudios y acceso para estudiantes desfavorecidos.

El gobierno de Obama ha logrado los hitos de hacer que los datos federales estén fácilmente disponibles para el sector privado y fomentar las plataformas abiertas de innovación a fin de abordar los problemas sociales. Los periodistas están ya haciendo cálculos sobre las cifras del College ScoreCard para proponer clasificaciones y recomendaciones. Seguro que de todo ello surgirán nuevas oportunidades empresariales.
