Výrobci léčiv nám chtějí namluvit, že prudce stoupající ceny léků na předpis jsou nezbytné, neboť musí pokrýt náklady na výzkum a vývoj – toto tvrzení naznačuje, že většinu peněz vydávají za výzkum a vývoj a že po zaplacení těchto nákladů jim zbudou jen skrovné zisky. Krácení cen by podle jejich slov zadusilo výzkum a vývoj a ochromilo inovace. Ve skutečnosti je to ale úplně jinak.

Velké farmaceutické firmy na výzkum a vývoj vydávají relativně málo – mnohem méně než na marketing a administrativu, ba dokonce méně, než kolik jim zbude na ziscích. Tak například, v roce 2002 činily tržby deseti největších amerických farmaceutických firem 217 miliard USD. Podle jejich vlastních údajů vydaly 14% tržeb na výzkum a vývoj. Víc než dvakrát tolik, úděsných 31%, však utratily za marketing a administrativu. A 17% jim zbylo jako zisky.

Většina farmaceutických společností slučuje ve výročních zprávách marketing a administrativu, přesto jedna vykázala, že 85% tohoto součtu bylo určeno na marketing. Za předpokladu, že tato cifra je zhruba stejná i u ostatních velkých společností – a jde o předpoklad odůvodněný –, pak na samotný marketing vydaly bezmála dvakrát víc, než kolik vyčlenily na výzkum a vývoj.
