La filosofía a la cabeza

MELBOURNE – El año pasado, un informe de la Universidad de Harvard hizo sonar señales de alarma, porque reveló que la proporción de estudiantes en Estados Unidos que se gradúan en humanidades cayó del 14% al 7%. Hasta las universidades de elite como Harvard han experimentado una caída similar. Es más, esta tendencia parece haberse pronunciado en los últimos años. Se habla de una crisis en las carreras de humanidades.

No sé suficiente sobre las humanidades en su conjunto como para comentar sobre qué es lo que está causando que las inscripciones decaigan. Quizá se crea poco probable que muchas disciplinas de humanidades lleven a carreras satisfactorias, o a alguna carrera en fin. Tal vez esto se deba a que algunas disciplinas no logran comunicar bien a la gente ajena a estas carreras lo que hacen y por qué es importante. O, por más difícil de aceptar que sea, tal vez no sea sólo una cuestión de comunicación: quizás algunas disciplinas de humanidades realmente se han vuelto menos relevantes para el mundo emocionante y de rápida transformación en el que vivimos.

Hago mención de estas posibilidades sin pronunciarme sobre ninguna de ellas. Sobre lo que sí sé algo, sin embargo, es sobre mi propia disciplina, la filosofía, que a través de su lado práctico, la ética, hace un aporte vital para los debates más urgentes que podamos tener.
