墨尔本—去年,哈佛大学的一份报告给我们敲响了警钟,报告指出,美国完成文科学士学位的学生比例从14%下降至7%。即使如哈佛这样的精英大学,这一比例也出现了类似的下降。此外,近几年来,这一下降趋势似乎更加明显了。人们开始谈论人文科学危机。

我不是很了解人文科学,不敢妄议学生注册率下降的原因。也许许多人文学科不太容易找工作,或者根本找不到工作。也许这是因为一些学科与外界沟通不充分,了解它们是干什么的、为什么重要的人太少。或者(也许这一解释更难令人接受),也许这根本不是沟通问题:也许一些人文学科确实变得与我们生活其中的令人振奋、快速变化的世界不太相关了。

我只是提出这些可能性,并不讨论如何调整。但是,我确实了解一些我的学科——哲学的东西。哲学通过其实用分支伦理学为我们最紧迫的争论做出了重大贡献。
