¿Proceso de paz o paz verdadera?

RAMALLAH – Las conversaciones directas entre los líderes palestinos e israelíes son la manera más evidente de lograr la paz en el conflicto de Oriente Medio. Pero la historia ha demostrado una y otra vez que un proceso de paz de perfil alto, por sí solo, no es la receta del éxito.

Todo está previsto para que la Liga Árabe se reúna más avanzado el mes con el fin de asesorar al liderazgo palestino sobre si comprometerse o no en conversaciones directas con Israel. Las autoridades palestinas dicen que no tiene ningún sentido entablar conversaciones directas que no son más que la oportunidad de sacarse una foto con el objetivo de crear la impresión de un proceso de paz al mismo tiempo que se evita todo compromiso sustancial.

Para los palestinos, el primer paso en verdaderas conversaciones de paz debe incluir algún acuerdo sobre las cuestiones básicas de las fronteras y la seguridad. Los palestinos han presentado a sus pares israelíes (a través de los estadounidenses) un ofrecimiento por escrito que incluye la cesión de tierras ocupadas por Israel en 1967 y hoy habitadas por colonos israelíes. Esas tierras serían intercambiadas por otras tierras iguales en tamaño e importancia. Israel todavía no ha ofrecido un solo documento por escrito que establezca su postura en cuanto al territorio que se convertirá en un estado palestino al costado de Israel.
