Pakistans nächster Kampf

NEW YORK: Die Terroristenzuflucht in der Region Südwasiristan im an Afghanistan grenzenden Stammesgebiet Pakistans zerfällt. Es hat eine Weile gedauert, bis die pakistanische Armee gegen die zunehmende Gewalt und das Chaos in der Region vorging, doch ihr Feldzug in Südwasiristan macht Fortschritte.

Die unmittelbare Bedeutung der Kampagne besteht darin, dass Pakistan entschlossen ist, seine Autorität in dem Gebiet zu etablieren. Doch das Zeitfenster, in dem das Militär das bestehende Machtvakuum dort füllen kann, wird nur kurze Zeit offen stehen. Die Terroristen haben schon früher gezeigt, dass sie einen Schlag hinnehmen, zurückschlagen und sogar ihre Netzwerke wieder aufbauen können.

Tatsächlich hat es, seit die pakistanische Armee im Oktober ihre Operation Rah-e-Nijat (Pfad zur Erlösung) einleitete, ein Dutzend verheerender Terroranschläge in Pakistans Großstädten gegeben, die die Reichweite der südwasirischen Kämpfer unter Beweis stellen. In ein paar Fällen waren in Islamabad führende Armee- und Geheimdienstoffiziere außerhalb der eigenen Wohnung das Ziel – trotz umfassender Sicherheitsmaßnahmen in und um die Hauptstadt.
