芝加哥—自从美国最高法院做出“公民联盟”(Citizen United)裁决——禁止政府限制公司和工会的独立政治支出——以来,人们对商业利益影响美国选举的担忧便与日俱增。但政治献金只是商业利益炙手可热的原因之一。在游说这件事上,钱并不是万能的,观点也起着重要作用。不幸的是,观点之争并没让竞争变得平等,反而导致美国政治愈加朝着有利于大企业利益的方向倾斜。

观点的重要性从日常小事中便可一窥端倪。有利于权势出资人的国会法案经常会被冠以诱人(同时也相当具有误导效果)的名字。比如,汇回海外收入所享受的免税期被称为“美国就业创造法”(American Job Creation Act)。(宣称)让社会所有人,而不仅仅是顶端特权人群都得到好处的法案更容易被通过。

更重要的是,如果没有“所有权社会”的观点,准政府按揭贷款商房利美和房地美当初就不会那么成功。谁会反对让每一位美国人都拥有房子这样的想法?正是这种观点的诱惑力让它们产生了如此危险的政治破坏力。
