芝加哥—发酵中的全球经济危机不但让在任政府输掉了大选,也让公司董事会如坐针毡。当股价和利润似乎要摆脱地球引力的时候,股东大会便呈现出美国政治传统的特征,成为一场公司形象秀,而不是讨论争议问题的论坛。今年的公司年会则有所不同。由于对低回报不满,投资者也比以前难对付多了。

比如,在瑞士信贷(Credit Suisse)和巴克莱(Barclays),超过四分之一的股东拒绝了管理层提出的薪资计划。在花旗集团(Citigroup)则成为标准普尔500指数成分股中第一家多数股东拒绝了管理层薪资计划的公司。

股东积极主义在其他公司也获得了(至少是局部)胜利。在雅虎(Yahoo!),股东积极主义者迫使其新任命的首席执行官因文凭造假而辞职。
