LONDRES – Muchas personas creen, desde hace un largo tiempo, que si el gobierno y el sector privado acordaran compartir sus datos más libremente y permitieran su procesamiento con los análisis adecuados, podrían surgir soluciones antes inimaginables a innumerables problemas sociales, económicos y comerciales. Tal vez no sean conscientes de cuánta razón tienen.

Incluso aquellos partidarios de la filosofía de datos abiertos que más se hacen oír parecen haber subestimado la cantidad de ideas y empresas rentables que esperan a ser creadas. Más de 40 gobiernos en todo el mundo se han comprometido con la apertura de sus datos electrónicos –incluidos sus registros meteorológicos, estadísticas delictivas, información sobre el transporte y mucho más– a empresas, consumidores y el público en general. El McKinsey Global Institute estima que el valor anual de los datos abiertos para la educación, el transporte, los productos de consumo, la electricidad, el gas y el petróleo, el cuidado de la salud y las finanzas minoristas llegarían a los 3 billones de dólares.

Estos beneficios adoptan la forma de nuevos y mejores productos y servicios, así como mejoras en la eficiencia para las empresas, los consumidores y los ciudadanos. Las opciones son muchas. Por ejemplo, utilizando los datos de diversas agencias gubernamentales, la Climate Corporation (recientemente adquirida por mil millones de dólares) ha tomado 30 años de información meteorológica, 60 años de datos sobre rendimientos agrícolas y 14 terabytes de información sobre tipos de suelos para crear seguros personalizados.
