波士顿—乍一看,说2011年9月11日写下了民族主义历史新的一笔不太合适,因为基地组织明白无误地自我标榜着它的全球特征。事实上,随着最初的袭击和困惑已被更加冷静的审视所取代,在那个可怕的日子所发生的恐怖袭击正在日渐被认为是民族主义众多里程碑中的一个,确实应该如此。

这种观点看来,这样的袭击不会再发生了,因为它们产生了如此众多的即时反响,反映了一种不可思议的非理性野蛮思维或者一种完全不同的文明——未现代化的、待启蒙的、从根本上说尚处于“传统”(换句话说,即尚未开发的)文明。在这一简明直白的观点看来,伊斯兰教——在世界经济落后地区的主宰性宗教——是2001年9月11日袭击背后的驱动力。而由于信奉伊斯兰教的人(几乎所有发出声音者都是如此)终于感受到伊斯兰教的伤害性内涵,因此多年来讨论此事引起了他们极大的痛苦。

没有什么说法可以委婉暗示这个世界上最大宗教之一是一种凶残的非理性的意识形态,不为现代文明人类社会所容。但两届美国政府都没有意识到这一点并据此行动。
