Las feministas con velo de Marruecos

Frecuentemente se considera que no hay lugar para el feminismo moderno, y por lo tanto no puede hacer grandes progresos en las sociedades que están experimentando un resurgimiento religioso, sobre todo en el mundo islámico. Pero el avance real registrado en años recientes de los derechos de la mujer en Marruecos indica otra cosa: una combinación única de activismo por parte de mujeres seculares y religiosas, los cálculos de los partidos políticos y un papel significativo para el Rey ha conducido a un avance verdadero.

Las feministas pioneras marroquíes iniciaron sus actividades poco después de la independencia en 1956. Representantes en gran medida de una perspectiva liberal, reconocían sin embargo la importancia del Islam en la sociedad marroquí. Como resultado, se preocuparon por presentar sus exigencias de forma que adquirieran un grado de identidad islámica.

La primera generación de feministas marroquíes se guió por una idea clave: la interacción entre hombres y mujeres no estaba determinada por la religión, sino por prácticas sociales que frecuentemente habían utilizado a la religión como medio de refuerzo. Por ejemplo, se relacionaba a las mujeres y su pureza sexual con el honor de los hombres y sus familias -una relación que se defendió al sustentarla en el Islam. Para estas activistas, esas relaciones trataban de mantener el control sobre las mujeres y eran parte de la sociedad marroquí, no del Islam.
