WASHINGTON, DC – Numa era de desemprego galopante, poderá parecer razoável assumir que as empresas não tenham problemas em encontrar empregados. Mas um estudo recente da McKinsey sobre 2.800 empregadores em todo o mundo veio sublinhar como essa percepção está errada. Quatro em dez empregadores disseram que não conseguem encontrar empregados para preencher posições de entrada nas suas empresas, com mais de um terço dos inquiridos a afirmar que os seus negócios estão a ser prejudicados por uma falta das competências necessárias no mercado de trabalho.

Entretanto, jovens em todo o mundo lutam por encontrar emprego. Embora a crise da zona euro ajude a explicar porque mais de metade dos jovens na Grécia e em Espanha estão desempregados, economias de rápido crescimento como a África do Sul e a Nigéria também experienciam taxas similares de desemprego jovem. No Médio Oriente e na África do Norte, um em cada três jovens está desempregado. E, nos Estados Unidos, perto de metade dos detentores de licenciaturas com menos de 25 anos estavam desempregados ou sub-empregados quando se formaram no ano passado.

Tudo isto aponta para a custosa incompatibilidade de competências actualmente em jogo na economia. Só nos EUA, o custo de oportunidade de não se conseguir melhorar a educação ascenderia a 1,7 biliões de dólares em 2030. Similarmente, se transpusesse o seu crescente fosso de competências, a China poderia aumentar o seu PIB em 250 mil milhões de dólares em 2020. Então porque não se faz mais para garantir que os jovens adquiram as competências de que precisam?
