华盛顿—世纪之交以来,国际发展界便团结在千年发展目标(MDG)背后。千年发展目标为包括贫困、儿童死亡率和疾病在内的八个领域设定了应在2015年达到的具体目标。为了设立2015年后的发展日程,评估MDG的成功以及总结进步不足之处是至关重要的。而这需要更好的数据。

平心而论,国际机构和许多发展中国家投资了许多资源用于改善数据收集以更好地追踪MDG方面的表现。2003年,只有四个国家在MDG22个主要指标中的16个或以上拥有两个数据点;而在去年,这一数字增加到118个国家。
