Les grandes entreprises face à leur responsabilité

LONDRES – Deux évolutions majeures s’opèrent aujourd’hui quant aux rapports de force qui caractérisent notre monde. Tout d’abord, la puissance des grandes entreprises s’accentue par rapport à celle des États. Deuxièmement, les citoyens ordinaires pèsent de plus en plus par leur influence. Comment expliquer que des évolutions a priori aussi contradictoires s’observent simultanément ?

De toute évidence, les entreprises jouissent d’un plus grand pouvoir que jamais auparavant. Leurs acteurs, qui n’ont pourtant pas été élus par le peuple, contrôlent de plus en plus les rouages de notre vie quotidienne – du secteur de l’entertainment à l’approvisionnement énergétique des établissements scolaires, en passant par les transports ferroviaires ou encore les services postaux. Dans le même temps, le rythme des innovations technologiques surpasse celui des législations, aboutissant à une situation dans laquelle les activités des entreprises s’effectuent bien souvent sur fond de zones d’ombre exemptes de toute réglementation.

Contrebalançant cette tendance, les citoyens disposent aujourd’hui de moyens et d’opportunités leur permettant de maintenir sous contrôle le comportement des entreprises. La population est en effet de plus en plus instruite et consciente de la manière dont fonctionnent les entreprises, se montrant plus proactive et plus spontanée lorsqu’elle estime qu’une société a franchi la ligne. L’opinion publique joue de plus en plus le rôle de conscience des entreprises et des industries, soulevant les questions problématiques et veillant à tenir ces entités responsables.
