伦敦——今天世界各地正出现两大权力转型。首先,企业权力相对于政府不断扩大。其次,普通民众的影响力也不断增加。这些看似矛盾的变化同时发生又意味着什么?

毫无疑问,公司手中的权力比以往任何时候都大。没有经过公众选举的人越来越多地控制我们的日常生活——从娱乐、能源供应到学校、铁路和邮政服务。与此同时,技术创新的速度超越了立法,这意味着企业活动经常进入看似缺乏监管的灰色地带。

但对此形成制衡的是民众现在拥有能力和机会确保公司行为不会失控。他们的受教育程度不断提高,也更清楚公司如何运作。当他们认为企业行为越界时,他们会比过去更加坦率和积极主动。公众越来越多地成为企业和行业的良知,提出尖锐的问题并要求他们负责。
