法国总统萨科齐在准备把法国推向一条新的经济道路时,其选择不能仅仅局限在英美的新自由主义模式以及正面临死亡的法国社会保护模式。事实上还有其他可行的替代方案,比如德国模式。不管怎样,德国现在是欧元区中发展最快的国家之一,因此它的某些做法肯定有可取之处。

那个“可取之处”就是在世界市场上的竞争力。德国的竞争力并不是天上掉下来的。这是过去数年来大规模公司重组带来了工人生产力的提高,以及德国工会组织愿意接受温和工资增长的结果。工会组织好几年时间保持克制才慢慢兴盛拥有了强劲的竞争力,但是它现在确实很兴盛。

即便面对现阶段对德国经济越来越乐观的态度,这个国家的工会组织依然表现得很温和。德国最大的产业工会德国金属产业工会负责为340万金属、电子和汽车业工人进行谈判,看来将会同意在2007和2008年把工资的年增长保持在大约3.3%的水平。这一安排一般被认为是“平衡的和无可非议的”。
