长命百岁是我们的最大愿望,医学和经济进步使这个愿望有了实现的可能。一些科学家称,人类平均寿命能在本世纪中叶能达到90岁。但是如果我们的愿望实现了怎么办?如果不能维持我们的生活水平,更长的寿命又有什么好处呢?

寿命延长计划中的主要困难是我们不知道我们是否真的会长寿。如果医学进步让人失望,或者被新出现的威胁和危险所抵消,到本世纪中叶,生命期望值或许也只不过能达到80岁——现在发达国家已经达到这个水平。如果我们为更长的寿命做好准备,而它却中断了,我们就会浪费大量珍贵的经济资源。但是如果我们没有为更长的寿命做足准备,许多老年人就会陷入贫困。

任何国家的经济总方向都取决于寿命长度。大量的老年人将意味着许多人要生活在某些特定地点,寻求某类住所,消费某种服务。能获得成功的公司类型、建筑楼房的种类、以及需要何种研究和发展全部依赖于人口需求统计。
