Russland und Amerika bei den Oscars

NEW YORK – Oscar hat gesprochen. Weder der als bester fremdsprachiger Film nominierte russische Beitrag Leviathan noch der als bester Film nominierte American Sniper haben gewonnen. Und doch sind beide in gewisser Weise die repräsentativsten Filme des Jahres, da jeder Streifen den Kern dessen erfasst, warum Russland und die Vereinigten Staaten derzeit dazu verurteilt scheinen, einen neuen Kalten Krieg zu führen.

Nach der russischen Invasion in der Ukraine gestaltete sich die PR-Kampagne für Leviathan überaus schwierig. Doch das in Leviathan gezeichnete düstere Porträt des Lebens im heutigen Russland liefert die Bestätigung für viele Gründe, warum die Amerikaner vielfach an der Reformfähigkeit Russlands nach dem Zusammenbruch des Kommunismus zweifelten.

Diese Zweifel fanden ihren Niederschlag in der Populärkultur. Seit 1991 dokumentierte Hollywood das amerikanische Misstrauen gegenüber dem postsowjetischen Russland in einer Reihe von Filmen – wie beispielsweise in The Saint – Der Mann ohne Namen, Airforce One, Der Goldene Kompass aus dem Jahr 2006, Salt und The November Man. Die aggressive Außenpolitik des russischen Präsidenten Wladimir Putin bestätigte die Russophoben in ihrer Haltung, weswegen die Nominierung von  Leviathan, dieser hervorragenden Studie des Putin-Regimes, nur richtig zu sein schien.
