从文化的角度将9·11解读为文明冲突有助于解释为什么大量前左翼分子会怀着对伊斯兰的敌意加入到保守阵营。放在过去,大多数美国左翼会将阿富汗战争视为新帝国主义行径。但是,9·11袭击的发生让事情起了变化。在塔利班统治下,女性被剥夺了受教育的权利,还被禁锢在布卡罩袍中。因此,一场针对塔利班及其客人本·拉登的战争就被包装成了一场妇女解放战争。

事实上,女权主义根本不可能是布什总统决定发动战争的考虑因素。但文化因素却让他赢得了一些意想不到的支持。
