La pisciculture est meurtrière

Selon un récent rapport de l’Organisation des Nations Unies pour l’alimentation et l’agriculture, près de la moitié des poissons consommés dans le monde ne sont pas pêchés dans leur milieu naturel, mais proviennent d’exploitations piscicoles. La consommation du saumon d’élevage bat des records, avec une production qui a augmenté de 300 % en 20 ans.

Les saumons étant carnivores, l’industrie de l’aquaculture s’est tournée progressivement vers un petit crustacé connu sous le nom de « krill antarctique », pour nourrir les appétits voraces de ces légions de poissons d’élevage. C’est une mauvaise nouvelle pour les léopards des mers, les pingouins d’Adélie, les baleines à bosse, les baleines bleues et pour les nombreuses autres espèces de l’écosystème marin de l’Antarctique qui se nourrissent soit de krill, soit d’un animal qui se nourrit de krill.

Présent dans les eaux froides de l’océan Austral, le krill est l’un des éléments essentiels de l’huile de poisson et de l’alimentation animale. Il ressort malheureusement des dernières recherches que l’essor de la pêche du krill pourrait nuire à l’écosystème antarctique. Les représentants des grandes nations de pêche se rencontrent à l’automne en Australie : ils ont la possibilité de limiter les zones de pêche, pour venir au secours des créatures qui ont besoin du krill pour survivre.
