对此普林斯顿大学的安格斯·迪顿教授在他精心研究撰写的新书《大逃亡:健康,财富,以及不平等的本原》中提出了警告。对那些关注世界贫困的人来说,此书无疑是长期来研究发展援助的最重要著作。

迪顿指出,在很大程度上西方援助都不是要改善受助者的境况,而是为了缓解捐助者的愧疚感。这在一些草率的援助反而导致糟糕现状不断固化的案例中显得尤为明显。虽然迪顿支持某些特定的举措——尤其是输送药物和科学知识——但他也质疑大多数援助是否通过了希波克拉底誓言的检验:“首先,不要伤害病人。”
