曼德拉的孩子

发自内罗毕——在我知道有尼尔森·曼德拉这个人存在之前,我觉得自己国家的领袖,时任肯尼亚总统的丹尼尔·阿拉普·莫伊(Daniel Toroitich arap Moi)是世界上唯一的政治家。当时我才五岁,对我来说除了出生地——马赛地(Maasailand)乡下的Nairagie Enkare地区——之外的世界是一片空白。莫伊只是我心目中一个虚构的人物,因为他并不住在Nairagie Enkare地区,但他经常在收音机里出现,而收音机这种高科技对一个孩子来说实在太难理解了。

或许以为早已对电台里的说辞滚瓜烂熟了,人们转而收听英国广播公司(BBC)的斯瓦西里语频道。每到晚上6点的时候,男人们就聚在那几个有电台的人家——比如我家——来收听节目。新闻只会播放半个小时,因此每个人都必须保持极端安静。但在某一天(我后来才知道是1990年2月11日),人们开始不断重复着一句话:“他自由了,尼尔逊·曼德拉自由了!”
