但其他地方的记者很少能受益于这种安全文化。从墨西哥,巴西到巴基斯坦,索马里,经常有记者遭到谋杀并最终不了了之。而通常情况下,当传递某一新闻的信使被捂住了嘴时,这个新闻也会是同等下场。

在过去15年中,国际新闻安全研究所一直在整理因工遇难的记者名单,并因此得出了令人震惊的发现:每十名遇难记者中往往有九名是在本国执行采访任务时身亡。还有许多记者被迫逃离自己的住所,工作岗位和国家;而那些留下来的人常常会对自身安全忧虑不已。
