Stopp der Lebensmittelverschwendung

ROM – Jedes Jahr verschwenden oder verlieren wir 1,3 Milliarden Tonnen Lebensmittel – ein Drittel der jährlichen weltweiten Nahrungsmittelproduktion. Das schiere Ausmaß lässt diese Zahl beinahe unbegreiflich erscheinen, egal aus welcher Perspektive man sie betrachtet.  Man stelle sich 143.000 Eiffeltürme übereinander gestapelt vor oder eine Anhäufung von 10 Billionen Bananen. 

Diese Zahl ist umso unfassbarer als neben dieser gewaltigen Verschwendung und dem Schwund 840 Millionen Menschen täglich an chronischem Hunger leiden. Viele weitere Millionen leiden an „stillem Hunger“ – also an Unterernährung und einem Mangel an Mikronährstoffen.

Für wirtschaftlich Denkende sei noch eine Zahl genannt: Verschwendung und Schwund von Lebensmitteln kosten, nach Erzeugerpreisen berechnet, ungefähr 750 Milliarden Dollar pro Jahr. Würde man auf Grundlage von Einzelhandelspreisen rechnen und die weitreichenderen Auswirkungen auf die Umwelt, einschließlich des Klimawandels, miteinkalkulieren, ergäbe sich eine noch viel höhere Zahl.
