近五年来日本首相年年易主,2010年选举总算没有重蹈覆辙。首相菅直人击败小泽一郎,当选执政党日本民主党(DPJ)主席。倘若菅直人在党内选举中输给了小泽这位民主党内最具影响的权力掮客,那他的首相职位也将不保。

双方在民主党内部的势力难分高下,菅的胜选归功于军方和兄弟党的支持。同样,近期的民意调查也显示出七分之九的民众对菅表示支持。

菅开始以民主党领袖身份出现不过是三个月前的事,当时前任首相鸠山由纪夫的政治献金事件和另一桩涉及小泽的丑闻使该党声誉大为受损。鸠山首相对日美关系的不当处理——以冲绳岛海军基地迁移问题为焦点——也对民主党造成不利影响。
