前进党在以色列大选中获胜是这个国家30年,甚至是更长时间来最重大的政治转折点。新成立还不到6个月的政党重新整合了以色列的政治局势,改变了支撑该国安全策略的整个意识形态构架。

人人都知道前进党将会获胜,与奉行缓和路线的左派工党组成执政联盟,后者在选举中紧随前进党之后获得次席。结果是有些前进党的支持者待在家里,而另外一些人去为工党投票,以增强后者与前进党联盟处理社会和经济事务的能力。

右派方面,沙龙从中退出创立前进党的利库德集团在选举中遭到惨败,部分原因是很多保守派选民也弃之而去,把票投给了宗教、移民和其它政党。实际上,很多小型政治团体,包括3个犹太宗教政党、阿拉伯政党和一个退休人员政党都在选举中获得了席位。由于前进党和工党即便联合组阁也无法占到多数,它们还必须获得这些组织的支持。
