墨尔本——1995年11月,以色列总理拉宾被犹太人极右翼分子刺杀前不久,我和他在特拉维夫会过一次面。当时我以澳大利亚外交部长的身份访问以色列,主要目的是讨论奥斯陆和平协议的快速实施问题,也就是讨论接受巴勒斯坦建国的问题。我如此总结我的观点(也许语气稍微显得重了些):“但是,很显然,我是在给信徒布道。”拉宾对此的回应使我永生铭记。他略作停顿,然后带着一丝微笑说:“给坚定教徒布道,不是信徒。”

拉宾遇刺是一场灾难,巴以和平进程从此停滞不前,再也没有取得任何进步。此后,没有一位以色列领导人表现出有如拉宾的远见卓识、鞠躬尽瘁和引导两国协商解决方案的能力。
