伊斯兰教内似乎发生了类似的事情。先知穆罕默德建立了一个——且是唯一的一个——宗教。然而今天说不定有一千种宗教自称是伊斯兰教。

对教义的不同诠释使穆斯林成了一盘散沙,不再扮演他们曾经在世界上扮演的角色;相反,他们变得虚弱,饱受迫害。什叶派和逊尼派之间的分歧如此之大,相互指责对方的追随者是叛教者,是卡菲尔(Kafir,阿拉伯语,意为“异教徒”—译者)。他们坚持认为对方的宗教不是伊斯兰教,对方的信徒不是穆斯林。这样的看法促成了两败俱伤的战争,导致数百万人死去——而且死亡并未停止。
