中東における保守派イスラムの優勢は、イスラム社会の根本的事実を反映している。しかし、この保守派は、暴力的な急進派とは異なる。遺憾ながらアメリカでされているような勘違いは、されるべきではない。「アラブストリート」(そしてペルシャストリート)の大多数が保守派であると主張するとしても、これは必然的に暴力やテロリズムによる地域の支配を意味するわけではない。

ダマスカスにあるイスラム研究センターは最近の発表で、保守派が中東のイスラム社会の80%を占めることを指摘した。残りの20%のほとんどは改革派である。急進派の支持者は人口の1%にも満たない。私の考えでは、この大まかな人口の分布は、多少の変化はあったにせよ、イスラムの歴史において過去10世紀を通して維持されてきた。

これらの違いを説明するために、イスラム用語は確立された。急進派は「ハワーリジュ派」として出現したイスラム初期からの狂信的グループであり、僅かな意見の違いさえ許さず抑圧するために冒涜の言いがかり、そして暴力を利用した。今日の保守派は、学者の間ではイスラム経典に固執する人々という意味で“People of the Letter”( 字義通りに解釈する人々)と呼ばれる。改革派は、今日認識されているように、「知性豊かな人々」と同意義である。
