伊拉克和中东地区最大的隐忧就是伊斯兰教和现代化水火不容。但马来西亚过去30年的历史表明:这个命题是错误的。实际上,伊斯兰化已经被证实是使多数马来人融入国家快速经济发展的一种有效的政治手段。

20世纪70年代早期,马来西亚还是个单纯的农业国,伊斯兰化运动也正方兴未艾,马来西亚开始推行所谓的“新经济政策”(NEP),旨在帮助大多数马来人更好地分享国家的财富。经历了长达30年令人叹为观止的经济增长,很多马来人都更加富裕和满足,他们的满足不仅来自世俗的资本主义,还来自国家对伊斯兰特质再一次的认可和接纳。这些伊斯兰特征中绝大部分都能与现代化水乳交融。(当然,自相矛盾的现象也不时出现,比如他们在倡导全球化的同时,要求加强审查制度。)

20世纪70年代伊斯兰化刚刚兴起之时,安瓦尔·伊伯拉罕等颇具伊斯兰头脑的政治家也开始登上了舞台。但他们所宣传的伊斯兰思想不是盯住过去不放,恰恰相反,他们尝试设计一种现代化的经济政策,同时考虑到穆斯林的诉求。
