伯克利—美国在过去35年中不平等性程度剧增,这一结论已是不容置疑。1979年以来的模式十分明确:越富的人,变得更富的程度也就越高。而如果你是穷人,你有可能继续当穷人。

但同样是这一时期,也是科技快速变化的时期。美国正在经历第三次工业革命——信息时代的崛起可能与此前工业革命一样动力十足——先是蒸汽、铁、棉花和机械;接着是内燃机、电力和钢铁,它们都改变了社会。
