La lógica inexorable de la economía colaborativa

MILÁN – Amazon desde su fundación el año 1994, y también eBay desde la suya al año siguiente, han aprovechado de la conectividad de Internet para crear nuevos mercados que son más eficientes. Al principio, eso significó nuevas formas de compra y venta de libros y objetos de colección; sin embargo, ahora el comercio electrónico está en todas partes, ofreciendo a los clientes productos nuevos y usados – y convirtiéndose en una fuerza a nivel mundial en los ámbitos de la logística y las ventas al por menor. Del mismo modo, si bien las actuales empresas que operan dentro del sistema de economía colaborativa prácticamente acaban de salir de su infancia, llegará el día en que sus servicios sean omnipresentes.

Hasta la fecha, la mayoría de las personas ya han oído hablar de Airbnb, el servicio de alquiler de apartamentos en línea. La empresa cuenta con sólo 600 empleados, pero tiene listadas un millón de propiedades en alquiler, lo que hace que sea más grande que las cadenas hoteleras de mayor tamaño del mundo. Por supuesto, lo que Airbnb ofrece es distinto a lo ofrecido por los hoteles; sin embargo, si Airbnb ofreciese opciones, por ejemplo, de servicios de limpieza o provisión de comidas, podría convertirse en un competidor más cercano de lo que en un principio uno podría haberse imaginado.

Los conocimientos profundos (obviamente visualizados en retrospectiva) subyacentes al modelo de Airbnb – y a la floreciente economía colaborativa en general – es que el mundo está repleto de bienes y recursos subutilizados. En los hechos, ¿cuánto tiempo pasamos usando las cosas – ya sean automóviles, bicicletas, apartamentos, casas de vacaciones, herramientas o yates – que poseemos? ¿Qué valor generan los edificios de oficinas o aulas durante la noche?
