En 2013, el empleado promedio de Goldman Sachs, el banco de inversión, ganaba 383.000 dólares -mucho más de lo que el empleado de mejor desempeño en la mayoría de las empresas puede aspirar a llevarse a casa.

Las diferencias salariales entre las empresas son considerables. Una investigación realizada por Jason Furman, principal asesor económico del presidente estadounidense, Barack Obama, y Peter Orszag, ex director de presupuesto de Obama, ha determinado que las diferencias salariales, cada vez mayores, son la causa principal de la creciente desigualdad salarial de Estados Unidos en las últimas décadas. Representan un porcentaje mayor del incremento en la desigualdad de ingresos general que las diferencias salariales dentro de las empresas o el ingreso de capital.

En el otro extremo del espectro, muchos participantes de la fuerza laboral tienen contratos temporarios, trabajan para firmas pequeñas o son autónomos. Algunos combinan diferentes empleos al mismo tiempo. Si, como esperan muchos, se desarrolla la llamada economía compartida, seguramente crecerán en número. Esos trabajadores no se benefician de la seguridad laboral y, por lo general, ganan menos.
