PARIGI – Quando si tratta di compensazioni, l’azienda per cui lavori spesso conta di più rispetto a quanto sei bravo in quello che fai. Nel 2013, l’impiegato medio di Goldman Sachs, la banca d'investimento, ha guadagnato 383.000 dollari – molto più di quanto nella maggior parte delle aziende il miglior lavoratore dipendente con i migliori risultati può sperare di portare a casa.

Le differenze riguardo al salario sono notevoli fra le aziende. Studi curati da Jason Furman, alto consigliere economico del presidente Usa Barack Obama, e da Peter Orszag, ex direttore del bilancio del presidente, hanno riscontrato che l'aumento dei differenziali retributivi sono la prima causa dell’ampliamento delle diseguaglianze salariali degli Stati Uniti negli ultimi decenni. Essi rappresentano una componente più ampia dell’aumento delle disuguaglianze complessive di reddito rispetto alle differenze salariali all'interno delle aziende o dei redditi da capitale.

All'altra estremità dello spettro, molta parte della forza lavoro presenta contratti a tempo determinato, lavora per piccole imprese, o da lavoratore autonomo. Alcuni mettono insieme diversi lavori contemporaneamente. Se, come previsto da molti, la cosiddetta economia della condivisione si svilupperà, il loro numero è destinato a crescere. Questi lavoratori non beneficiano di sicurezza sul lavoro e, in generale guadagnano molto meno.
