PAŘÍŽ – Pokud jde o odměňování, je často důležitější, pro jakou společnost pracujete, než jak dobře děláte, co děláte. V roce 2013 si průměrný zaměstnanec investiční banky Goldman Sachs vydělal 383 000 dolarů ročně – to je mnohem vyšší výdělek, než v jaký může doufat nejlepší zaměstnanec ve většině firem.

Rozdíly v odměňování jsou mezi firmami značné. Výzkum, jehož autory jsou Jason Furman, hlavní ekonomický poradce amerického prezidenta Baracka Obamy, a Peter Orszag, Obamův bývalý ředitel rozpočtu, zjistil, že rostoucí mzdové rozdíly představují hlavní příčinu prohlubující se nerovnosti výdělků v USA v posledních desetiletích. Na vzestupu celkové nerovnosti příjmů se podílejí více než mzdové rozdíly uvnitř jednotlivých firem či kapitálové příjmy.

Na opačném konci spektra stojí řada účastníků trhu práce, kteří mají smlouvy na dobu určitou, pracují pro malé firmy nebo jsou samostatně výdělečně činní. Někteří mají několik zaměstnání současně. Bude-li se rozvíjet takzvaná ekonomika sdílení, jak mnozí očekávají, pak jejich počet logicky poroste. Tito zaměstnanci nemají jistotu pracovního místa a obecně vydělávají mnohem méně.
