巴黎——六十年前的这一周,联合国采纳了《世界人权宣言》,这是保护所有人与生俱来的尊严和平等权利的第一份国际公告。直到今天,《世界人权宣言》依然是跨越民族、意识形态和文化分野来探讨道德价值观的唯一一个最重要的基准点。

可是《人权宣言》有关个人自由、社会保护、经济机遇和群体职责的进步观点迄今仍未实现。充满悲剧色彩的是,种族灭绝的暴行却再次出现,这一次是在苏丹。2001年9月针对美国的袭击事件发生后安全措施越来越严厉,其中也包括让“特别引渡”(即在不履行相应法律手续的情况下在国家间押解犯人和嫌疑人)和“酷刑折磨”合法化的企图。

对于世界各地的女性来讲,家庭暴力和就业歧视是她们每天不得不面对的问题。生活在发达和发展中国家的少数族裔不得不忍受耻辱、歧视和暴力。审查制度和媒体恫吓剥夺了数百万人了解信息的权利。
