La minaccia alimentare contro la civiltà umana

PALO ALTO – L’umanità si trova a confrontarsi con una grave serie di problematiche ambientali in aumento strettamente connesse tra di loro, tra cui sfide importanti e ampiamente discusse come il cambiamento climatico e l’altrettanto grave minaccia della sopravvivenza degli organismi che sostengono le nostre vite garantendo servizi ecosistemici fondamentali come l’impollinazione dei raccolti ed il controllo dei parassiti nel settore agricolo. Ma ci troviamo di fronte a numerose altre sfide come la diffusione di prodotti chimici sintetici tossici a livello mondiale, le epidemie e la drammatica riduzione della qualità e dell’accessibilità alle risorse minerali, all’acqua e al terreno.

Sono già in atto diversi conflitti per le risorse, e se dovesse scoppiare una guerra “minore” per le risorse nucleari tra l’India ed il Pakistan, sappiamo bene che la guerra in sè porterebbe alla fine della civiltà.

Ma noi crediamo che la minaccia più grave alla sostenibilità globale nei prossimi decenni sia legata ad un aspetto sul quale c’è già ampio accordo, ovvero la crescente difficoltà di evitare carestie su vasta scala. Come viene indicato nel rapporto del World Economic Forum del 2013 “la sicurezza alimentare e nutritizionale globale è una grande preoccupazione a livello globale; il mondo si prepara infatti a nutrire una popolazione in continuo aumento sulla base di risorse sempre più scarse in un’era di crescente volatilità e incertezza.” In effetti, il rapporto sottolinea come “più di 870 milioni di persone siano già in una condizione di alimentazione insufficiente e quindi più a rischio in relazione agli eventi climatici ed ai picchi dei prezzi”. Pertanto, “mai come ora è necessario individuare con urgenza delle misure mirate a migliorare la sicurezza alimentare”.
