De l’exactitude des experts

Chaque jour, les experts nous bombardent de leurs points de vue sur des sujets aussi variés que les insurgés irakiens, les cultivateurs de coca boliviens, les banquiers centraux européens et le Politburo de Corée du Nord. À quel point sont-ils crédibles, ces experts ?

Une vision optimiste est que tant que ceux qui vendent de l’expertise rivalisent énergiquement pour capter l’attention des sagaces acheteurs (les médias), les mécanismes du marché assureront le contrôle de la qualité. Les experts publiés dans les pages opinion des journaux, ou qui passent à la télévision et à la radio, doivent assurément jouir d’une bonne réputation puisque dans le cas contraire, ils auraient été éliminés.

Les sceptiques avertissent pourtant que les médias nous imposent leurs choix d’orateurs et qu’ils sont moins intéressés par des débats raisonnés que par la manière de s’adapter aux préjugés populaires. En conséquence, la célébrité peut très bien être liée négativement, et non de façon positive, à l’exactitude à long terme.
