斯坦福—8月,在菲律宾国际水稻研究所(International Rice Research Institute),一组激进分子大肆破坏所谓的“黄金大米”试验田。黄金大米是一种包含贝塔胡萝卜素(可转变为维生素A)的转基因大米。其中一些暴徒甚至得到了瑞典政府的国际发展合作局(International Development Cooperation Agency)的支持,后者为菲律宾基金组织MASIPAG提供资金。

大米富含碳水化合物,但缺少维生素,对于以之为主食的穷人来说,“生物强化”稻种可谓无价之宝。在发展中国家,有两到三亿儿童存在缺乏维生素A的危险,而维生素A是免疫系统的组成部分,缺少它会导致身体容易感染麻疹和腹泻等疾病。每年维生素A缺乏症都要导致大约五十万儿童失明,其中70%会在一年内死去。

9月,一组杰出科学家呼吁科学界“团结起来坚决反对针对黄金大米等宝贵进步所必须的实验的暴力破坏,这些进步可以拯救数百万”人免于“不必要的痛苦和死亡”。但这一热烈呼吁并不能解决根本性问题:毫无根据地认为“转基因生物”(GMO)和常规生物之间存在有意义的差异。
