DUBAI – Las compañías al igual que las personas, envejecen. Empiezan su vida pequeñas y deseosas de sobrevivir. Las impulsan la energía joven y las ideas frescas. Compiten, crecen, maduran y, en última instancia se extinguen, salvo contadas excepciones. Lo mismo sucede con los gobiernos: también pueden perder el impulso y la ambición de la juventud y caen en el conformismo.

Consideremos lo siguiente: solo 11% de las 500 compañías que figuraban en Fortune en 1955 existen hoy en día, mientras que la vida promedio de las empresas que permanecen entre las primeras 500 ha disminuido de 75 a 15 años. En estos tiempos de cambio veloz, aquellos que se rezagan se vuelven irrelevantes en un instante. Los países  cuyos gobiernos envejecen encaran la misma suerte que las compañías obsoletas. Sus opciones son simples: innovar o morir.

La carrera por la competitividad a nivel nacional es tan ruda como la competencia entre empresas. Los países compiten por inversiones, talento, crecimiento y oportunidades en un mundo globalizado y aquellos que quedan fuera dejan ir el mayor de los premios: el desarrollo del ser humano, la prosperidad y la felicidad de sus pueblos.
