Gli OGM e la scienza spazzatura

STANFORD – Nello scenario mediatico odierno, dove le opinioni infondate, la pubblicità martellante e i pettegolezzi impazzano, il metodo scientifico, ovvero lo strumento attraverso il quale determiniamo ciò che è vero in base a prove empiriche e misurabili, dovrebbe essere un pilastro della realtà. La scienza ci permette di valutare ciò che pensiamo di sapere e di individuare ciò che non sappiamo. Cosa ancor più importante, la scienza scredita le affermazioni false fatte per motivi personali o politici, o così almeno dovrebbe fare.

Ma a volte gli scienziati “si ribellano” e abbandonano il metodo scientifico, spesso ai fini della notorietà o del profitto economico, per generare messaggi di propaganda e seminare terrore in un pubblico che non ha le conoscenze adeguate ma è affamato di informazioni. Questa forma di abuso dell’autorità scientifica è particolarmente diffusa nelle industrie alimentari “organiche” e “naturali” che sfruttano le paure delle persone nei confronti dei prodotti sintetici e “non naturali”.

Ne è un esempio recente lo scienziato indoamericano V.A. Shiva Ayyadurai che ha pubblicato, insieme a Prabhakar Deonikar, un articolo piuttosto ridicolo intitolato “Gli OGM accumulano formaldeide e distruggono l’equilibrio del sistema molecolare? La biologia dei sistemi potrebbe darci una risposta.” (Gli “OGM” sono “organismi geneticamente modificati”, di per sé una non-categoria fuorviante e ingiustamente stigmatizzata, che circoscrive un universo di organismi modificati con le tecniche più moderne e precise di ingegneria genetica).
