大英帝国在十九世纪领导的世界上第一波经济全球化浪潮随着1914年一个星期天下午的一声枪响而告终结。普林茨用两颗瞄准的并不准确的子弹刺死了奥地利的斐迪南大公夫妇。随后数年里全欧洲尸横遍野,整个二十年代都是风雨飘摇,法西斯主义和共产主义上台,最终导致在二次大战期间死亡无以计数的数百万人口。

今天的全球化时代是否也在终结呢?如果是这样的话,倒不一定会以重复上世纪的大屠杀而告结束,而是以带来经济停滞并让数十亿计的人口限于赤贫的经济萎缩而告终结。

全球化的刺客候选人已经被提出了好几个。但是一个被人忽略、但却是可能的渴求者一直潜伏在世界经济当中,那就是不断增长的限制人口自由流通的、“隔离”富国的趋势。如今,我们不断地看到这一趋势的威胁,但是,我们对此不以为然乃至于我们会习以为常,而不是予以解决。
