Cómo corregir la cultura bancaria

WASHINGTON, DC – Los bancos y las actividades bancarias se basan en la confianza. Pero mientras que la confianza tarda años en establecerse, puede desmoronarse abruptamente si la ética de un determinado banco es débil, si sus valores son pobres y si su comportamiento es decididamente erróneo.

Los acontecimientos que desataron la crisis financiera global de 2008, junto con los escándalos que luego salieron a la luz -desde la manipulación de la tasa LIBOR (tasa interbancaria ofrecida de Londres) hasta el incumplimiento de sanciones y los casos de lavado de dinero-, conforman un catálogo de fracasos culturales dentro de nuestras instituciones financieras. Sí, desde la crisis se han tomado medidas exhaustivas destinadas a fortalecer el sistema financiero. Pero sigue existiendo una debilidad profunda: para ser franco, tiene que ver con la cultura de toma de riesgo que todavía prevalece dentro de algunos departamentos de los bancos globales y en el propio sistema financiero.

Muchas veces, las promesas de los jefes de los bancos de cambiar la "cultura corporativa" y asegurar la buena conducta de sus empleados no se tradujeron en una implementación plenamente efectiva. En muchos casos, los bancos todavía siguen sin cumplir con sus obligaciones a la hora de brindarles servicio a sus comunidades y al público en general.
