COPENHAGUE – Au cours du siècle dernier, la bataille en faveur de l'égalité des femmes et des jeunes filles se déroulait dans les écoles, dans les isoloirs et dans les conseils d'administration des 500 premières entreprises du classement du magazine Fortune. Mais si nous voulons éradiquer l'inégalité homme-femme, nous ne pouvons plus négliger un facteur qui est à la fois l'une de ses causes et l'une de ses conséquences majeures : la malnutrition.

Aujourd'hui, ce ne sont pas moins de 1,6 milliards de personnes à travers le monde qui souffrent d'anémie, une maladie souvent due à un déficit en fer - et l'un des symptômes de la crise alimentaire mondiale qui affecte de manière disproportionnée les femmes. L'anémie les touche deux fois plus que les hommes - prés d'une femme sur trois en souffre, et elle joue un rôle dans 20% des décès maternels.

En 2012, l'Assemblée mondiale de la santé a fixé comme objectif la réduction de 50% du taux d'anémie d'ici 2025. Mais au rythme actuel, ce taux ne sera pas atteint avant 2124 ! Malgré quelques progrès difficilement réalisés en faveur des femmes, nous affichons un retard d'un siècle sur une question clé en matière de santé et de développement pour les femmes et leurs enfants.
