Aus der Depression in die Freiheit

Ungefähr ein Viertel aller Menschen erkranken im Laufe ihres Lebens an einer klinischen Depression. Dabei handelt es sich um eine Besorgnis erregende und lang anhaltende Gemütsverfassung, während der sich normale Traurigkeit zu einem schmerzhaften Zustand der Hoffnungslosigkeit, Lustlosigkeit, Antriebslosigkeit und Erschöpfung auswächst. Obwohl dieser Gemütszustand ausreichend definiert ist, bedeutet eine klinische Depression nicht für jeden Menschen das Gleiche und der Schweregrad der Symptome schwankt zwischen leicht und schwerwiegend.

Anzeichen einer leichten Depression können Grübeleien über negative Aspekte an der eigenen Person oder an anderen Menschen sein, Gefühle der Verbitterung oder Wut, Selbstmitleid und der ständige Wunsch nach Bestätigung durch andere. Überdies kann sie zu verschiedenen physischen Beschwerden führen, die aber offenbar nicht von einer körperlichen Erkrankung herrühren.

Bei einer Verschlimmerung der Depression kommt es zu extremer Traurigkeit und Hoffnungslosigkeit in Verbindung mit geringem Selbstwertgefühl, Schuldgefühlen, Gedächtnisverlust und Konzentrationsschwierigkeiten. Daraus resultiert ein überaus schmerzlich empfundener Gemütszustand. Erschwerend hinzu kommt, dass sich auch grundlegende Körperfunktionen ändern können. Der gewohnte tägliche Rhythmus scheint aus dem Ruder zu laufen: Man kann nicht schlafen oder schläft zu viel, man kann nichts essen oder isst zu viel. Die Begeisterung für Aktivitäten, die normalerweise Spaß machen, lässt nach. Manchmal tritt sogar ein Gefühl ein, dass das Leben nicht mehr lebenswert und der Tod die bessere Lösung wäre.
