El miedo a los transgénicos

NAIROBI – La prohibición de importar cultivos transgénicos aprobada en Kenia refleja una tendencia preocupante en un país tradicionalmente visto como innovador en materia agrícola, y es también un enorme retroceso para un continente que lucha por garantizar su seguridad alimentaria. Un enfoque racional y científico debe prevalecer sobre el prejuicio, el temor y la conjetura. Y Kenia puede dar el ejemplo.

La seguridad de los cultivos transgénicos (también llamados genéticamente modificados o biotecnológicos) está demostrada, y se los usa con éxito en todo el mundo para mejorar la productividad agrícola. Pero la burocracia, la propaganda y la desinformación impiden a millones de agricultores africanos, incluidos los kenianos, acceder a una tecnología que puede mejorar sus economías y ayudar a remediar la escasez de alimentos.

Por la escasez actual de cereales en el país, más de un millón de kenianos dependen de ayudas alimentarias. La Red de Sistemas de Alerta Temprana de Hambrunas de Kenia señala que los precios del maíz, que ya son altos, seguirán creciendo hasta fin de año, lo que dificultará todavía más la seguridad alimentaria y el desempeño económico. En la lucha de Kenia por alimentar a su gente y estabilizar su economía, la tecnología transgénica debería verse como un valioso aliado para aumentar la producción y los ingresos, con beneficios para los agricultores, los consumidores y el medio ambiente.
