PRINCETON – Gipfeltreffen werden durch ihren Austragungsort definiert. So fand die Weltwirtschaftskonferenz 1933 kurioserweise im Londoner Geologischen Museum in Kensington statt. Dies zu einer Zeit, als internationale Zusammenarbeit in ebenso weiter Ferne schien wie die versteinerten Dinosaurier. Insofern ist vielleicht auch Deauville in der französischen Normandie mit seiner (leicht abgewetzten) Eleganz eines vergangenen Zeitalters voll elitären Luxus, pompöser Prasserei und opulenter Bankette nicht gerade eine glückliche Wahl als Austragungsort eines G-8-Treffens.   

Heuer sprachen die Teilnehmer des G-8-Gipfels über interessante, aber nebensächliche Themen wie etwa die wirtschaftlichen Auswirkungen des Internet. Noch schlimmer: Wichtige Angelegenheiten wie etwa die Nahrungsmittelsicherheit wurden als Nebensächlichkeit abgehandelt.

Das Thema Nahrungsmittel trat erstmals beim Gipfeltreffen im italienischen L’Aquila im Juli 2009 in den Vordergrund. Damals als Reaktion auf einen ins Stocken geratenen Rohstoffboom, der aber seither mit der Gewalt eines Hurrikan wiedergekehrt ist. Nun verhandeln die G-8 die Finanzierung von schmerzlindernden Maßnahmen.
