BERKELEY – Cuando Mark Zuckerberg, fundador de Facebook, y su esposa Priscilla Chan anunciaron hace poco su plan de destinar $45 mil millones en acciones de la empresa para mejorar las condiciones del planeta, muchos lo descalificaron como una maniobra de relaciones públicas, señalando que no estaban poniendo sus acciones en una fundación caritativa, sino en una compañía inversora que podía asignar fondos a donde lo deseara, y que las inversiones con fines de lucro eran una de esas opciones.

Los escépticos también señalaron que, en lugar de hacer un compromiso legal irrevocable, la pareja sólo había prometido donar “la mayor parte de su riqueza” al fondo. Según un crítico malintencionado, Zuckerberg sencillamente estaba “haciendo pasar su dinero de un bolsillo a otro”, con “un retorno a la inversión en cuanto a relaciones públicas que empequeñece al de sus acciones de Facebook”.

La verdad es bastante diferente. La estrategia que Chan y Zuckerberg han adoptado, una combinación de filantropía tradicional e inversión de impacto, está en completa sintonía con las tendencias más promisorias del altruismo moderno.
