Demos la bienvenida a la crisis de la teoría de la evolución

EXETER – Los que creen que un ser sobrenatural creó el universo nunca han planteado un desafío intelectual a la teoría de la evolución. Sin embargo, los creacionistas, ya sea los fundamentalistas bíblicos o los creyentes en un “diseño inteligente”, sí son una amenaza al pensamiento científico. De hecho, la idea insidiosa del creacionismo se encuentra fundamentada en su capacidad de reinventar la evolución a su propia imagen, es decir como un sistema de creencias dogmáticas – y por tanto como la antítesis de la ciencia.

Los creacionistas tienen razón en una cosa: contrariamente a la impresión que deja mucha de la literatura sobre el tema, la teoría de la evolución está en crisis. Pero este es un hecho positivo, ya que refleja el progreso no lineal del conocimiento científico, que se caracteriza por lo que Thomas Kuhn describió en su influyente libro “La estructura de las revoluciones científicas” (The Structure of Scientific Revolutions) como “cambios de paradigma”.

Durante los últimos 70 años, el paradigma dominante en la ciencia de la evolución ha sido la denominada “nueva síntesis”. Ampliamente difundida en los últimos años por el biólogo evolucionista de Oxford Richard Dawkins, la nueva síntesis une a la teoría de la selección natural de Darwin con la genética mendeliana, que explica la herencia genética.
