La amenaza federalista para Europa

ESTOCOLMO – El mundo es fundamentalmente diferente después del referendo del “Brexit” en el Reino Unido. Pasarán décadas antes de que veamos todos los efectos de la decisión de los votantes británicos de abandonar la Unión Europea.

Sin embargo, algo que podemos saber de seguro es que a la UE le conviene mantener sólidos vínculos con el RU, a pesar de la decisión unilateral de los votantes británicos. Hay demasiado en juego como para que el proceso quede a merced de pequeños juegos de poder que socavan o eclipsan los intereses comunes, como tan a menudo ocurre en la política europea.

En lo económico, no hay duda de que el crecimiento de la UE se beneficiará de una relación comercial abierta con Gran Bretaña. Las empresas europeas siguen confiando en Londres como el único centro financiero global de la región, por lo que un acuerdo de libre comercio que incluya los servicios financieros reducirá los daños del Brexit para todos los actores involucrados. Incluso si los servicios bancarios se desplazan a otros puntos de la eurozona, compañías como Volvo, Siemens y Total seguirán necesitando a Londres si desean competir con otras como Toyota, GE y Exxon.
